Why Pax Africana?
The history of Africa is a chronicle of events, which pitched many of the ethnic groups against each other. The resultant effect is a cycle of ethnic violence and vengeance. There are no benefits that had accrued to Africa from this trend but the losses in human and material terms are monumental.
- Between 1967-1970, Nigeria lost over 3 million people to a civil war.
- Between 1989-2003, Liberia had witnessed two civil wars in which over 250,000 people died and over 1 million persons turned to refugees.
- The movie Hotel Rwanda is a snapshot of events in Rwanda. In about 100 days, over 800,000 persons were killed due to ethnic vengeance.
- Between 1996-2003, Congo had fought two wars in which over 4 million lives were lost.
Almost every African country from Ethiopia to South Africa have been impacted by ethnic violence and war. Ethnic hatred and vengeance has become a cancer that must be fought if Africa is to be returned to the path of peace and sustainable development. It is in response to this urgent need that Pax Africana was formed. At Pax Africana, we want to ensure that never again would there be genocide in Africa. Through our educational and public awareness campaigns, our goal is to mobilize Africans to join hands with the rest of humanity to say 'No' to ethnic vengeance, and 'Yes' to Peace.
